Amarillo CDL permit and skills-test guide

For an Amarillo CDL appointment, check the class and transmission of the vehicle you will bring to DPS. If you haul a trailer along I-40, tell us which combination you use. If you operate a straight truck or bus, give us its passenger capacity, brake type and your permit endorsements so we can discuss the right test vehicle.

Choose the permit subjects for your vehicle

A stock trailer, dry van and grain trailer can all sit behind different power units. Start with the ratings on your actual truck and trailer, then tell us whether you expect to drive a manual at work.

Review Texas commercial vehicle operation and general knowledge. Add air brakes, combination vehicles, or passenger and school bus topics as your vehicle requires. Use the current Texas handbook alongside practice questions.

Prepare for inspection, backing and road

Work through the pre-trip in the order you can repeat aloud. On the backing exercises, account for the truck’s wheelbase and trailer swing. On the road, practice mirror checks and controlled turns in the type of vehicle you intend to test in.

Amarillo spans Potter and Randall counties. For a title or plate transaction, choose the tax office for the county where you live. Amarillo also has a state driver license center on East I-40 and a separate TxDMV regional service center on Canyon Drive. The service you need determines which address to use.
